Democratise knowledge of healthcare:Binayak Sen

From Infian Express:

Pune: “The role of a doctor should not be akin to a magician, who essentially hides his knowledge, but that of a teacher who spreads knowledge,” said Dr Binayak Sen who was in the city on Monday to deliver the Rajnikant and Mabelle Memorial lecture.

“There is a need to democratise knowledge of healthcare. The work done by the Aroles in the Jamkhed region of Ahmednagar district has influenced much of my work in the first regions of Chhattisgarh. The first contact care role played by the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) can be a deciding factor in saving a malaria patient’s life within the first 48 hours if that kind of training is given to them.”

Elaborating on the lapses of the present day healthcare, he said the basic idea behind the ASHAs was to help the healthcare provider integrate with the community rather than them being a part of the existing health bureaucracy. However, the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has so far not been able to achieve that, he added.
