Khalra Centre for Human Rights Defenders inaugurated in Delhi

New Delhi, India (November 21, 2011): The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) and the World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) announced the inauguration of the Khalra Centre for Human Rights Defenders in New Delhi, which is named after legendary martyr of Human Rights – Jaswant Singh Khalra, during a conference held in collaboration with other human rights groups from across India on November 19th and 20th.

Towards Healthcare for All

Sixty-five years after the Joseph Bhore Committee on health recommended that the State take full responsibility for providing preventive and curative services to all Indians, another opportunity to take a step in that direction is with us. The High Level Expert Group (HLEG) on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for India, constituted by the Planning Commission, has offered a blueprint for introducing a National Health Package that would entitle all citizens to primary, secondary and tertiary care that is paid for by the state. This comes at a time when there is a momentum the world over – other than in the United States and China – to provide universal healthcare. India, which has one of the most indifferent records in the world in this area, must embark on the 10-year path laid out by the HLEG to move to universal care.

Hundreds rally in Baloda Bazar, Total strike at ACC Bhilai! Release trade union leader Comrade Bhagwati Sahu!!

On 10th December, Human Rights Day, ACC-Holcim cement factory at
Bhilai remained on near total strike in support of the demand to
release Comrade Bhagwati Sahu, a leader of the militant contract
workers union Pragatisheel Cement Shramik Sangh. The workers of SAV
Steel also went on a sympathetic strike. Hundreds of workers took out
a rally from Niyogiji’s statue in Bhilai to Ambedkar Chowk where they
garlanded the statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. Traffic came to a
standstill at the Ambedkar Chowk on the Nagpur-Raipur National Highway
for a good 15-20 minutes as the rally passed. Then the workers handed
over a Memorandum bearing thousands of signatures for the Governor to
the Sub Divisional Magaistrate Chhaoni demanding the release of Com.
Bhagwati Sahu.

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties, represented by its National Secretary Kavita Srivastava and Odisha Convenor Pramodini Pradhan visited the area in and around Dhinkia Panchayat in Jagatsinghpur district on 1st December, 2011, where the struggle against the proposed POSCO steel plant is taking place for the last seven years. We also went to Choudwar Jail in Cuttack District on 2nd December, 2011 to meet Mr Abhay Sahoo the leader of the POSCO Pratirodh Sangharsh Samiti, who has been arrested against FIRs motivated by the administration under sections causing sexual assault, wrongfully confining somebody and causing atrocities under the SC & ST Act.
