Citizens for Justice and Peace condemns Sanjeev Bhatt’s arrest

The Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) strongly condemns the vinictive action of the Gujarat government in arresting Sanjeev Bhatt, senior IPS office in an action that is nothing short of an attempt to intimidate an important witness in the Zakia Ahsan jari and CJP criminal complaint against chief minister arendra Modi and 61 others. This action of the Gujarat police under the direct intructions of the state’s Home Minister—Narendra Modi amounts to tampering with evidence and direct intimidation of a key witness. It is also a cheap attempt to slur his character and standing.

Binayak for law to make healthcare a legal entitlement

With the Planning Commission’s steering committee on health scheduled to submit its draft report within two weeks, noted human rights activist and committee member Binayak Sen has advocated immediate enactment of a law that would make health care at staffed health institutions a public-funded legal entitlement for every citizen.


Letter of complaint against the abduction of Arun Ferreira and subsequent arrest (and related news)

[Arun Fereira was arrested in May 2007 for alleged links with Naxalites. Eight cases under UAPA were foisted on him. In due time, he was acquitted in all of them. On September 23, he was acquitted in the last case, related to the arrest of 11 students from Chandrapur on similar charges in 2008, at the time of which Arun Fereira was in jail. There were no other cases on him. The following letter recounts what happened when he was about to be released on September 27 - he was abducted by unidentified persons and subsequently his lawyer was informed that he had been taken to Purada police station and arrested in Crime No. 14/2007 i.e. a case registered in 2007.]

Arun was first arrested in 2007. He was also tortured in prison. Among the charges was that he was a Maoist. The prosecution was unable to produce any evidence to substantiate the charges and he was acquitted by the trial court. However, he was rearrested immediately on other false charges.
