Binayak for law to make healthcare a legal entitlement

With the Planning Commission’s steering committee on health scheduled to submit its draft report within two weeks, noted human rights activist and committee member Binayak Sen has advocated immediate enactment of a law that would make health care at staffed health institutions a public-funded legal entitlement for every citizen.

Binayak Sen: We are living in a constant state of famine

Reiterating that he does not condone any form of violence — neither state nor non-state actors — social activist Dr Binayak Sen Friday said that the Supreme Court judgment on Salwa Judum will become “the foundation of our democratic polity.”

Sen was speaking at a function organised by the Forum for protection of Democratic Rights, which is a body formed by different lawyers of Delhi.

Post function, when rediff.com asked him about the Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption protest, the only thing Sen said was, “I condemn the way the police arrested Anna Hazare.”

Gigantic inequalities in access to healthcare: Amartya Sen

There are gigantic inequalities in access to healthcare, which are also a contributor to poor health, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen said here on Saturday.

Professor Sen also referred to the work done by human rights activist Dr. Binayak Sen among tribals in India as an indicator of the vast inequalities present.
